Open Memorial Day
Sunday, 08.09.2024 is OPEN MEMORIAL DAY. Treasures and cinematic rarities from Dresden's film archives will be shown in the Clubkino in the LIngner Schloss Dresden from 11 am to 6 pm.
From 4 p.m., the documentaries “Confession to History - The Reconstruction of Dresden Castle” (1999, 25min), “The Expansion of the Kupferstichkabinett” (2004, 12min) and “Best of Schloss 2016” (6min) by Ralf Kukula/ Balance Film will be shown.
The film documentation of the reconstruction of Dresden Castle was made from 1986-2016. Initially commissioned by the Dresden District Council by the DEFA studio for animated films, and later, from 1991, by the company Balance Film. In 40 years, the stock of archive material has grown to a total of over 200 hours with around 340 cassettes of raw video material and 19,000m of raw 35mm film material. In terms of duration and volume, this documentation is unique in Germany. The archive holdings on the reconstruction of the palace include footage of rare trades (e.g. sgraffito, copper plumbers, tower clock builders, plasterers and photographers taking measurements), highlights of the construction work (topping-out ceremony at the Hausmannsturm, archaeological excavations, reconstruction of the Green Vault, helicopter flights, crane rides), interim uses (e.g. exhibitions, concerts, palace theaters, etc.), and the use of the palace as a museum. exhibitions, concerts, palace theater, state press ball, artists' and restorers' workshops) or interviews (e.g. with the painters Immendorff and Baselitz, star architect Peter Kulka, state archaeologist Hans Nadler). As a special feature, a permanently installed time-lapse camera records the reconstruction of the Pretiosa Hall (the heart of the Treasury) over a period of around three years.
