This unusual film about the Green Vault was created from the collection of what is probably the longest construction documentation in Germany.

The making of the Green Vault

Reconstruction of the Dresden Palace - the legendary home to the "Secret Custody of the Green Vault" - began as early as 1986. The entire process was documented on camera - initially by a team from DEFA, East Germany´s state film monopoly, and as from 1991 until 2017 by a team from Balance Film. From their walth of recordings comes this extraordinary film about the Green Vault, Europe´s oldest and richest collection of precious treasures. It is impossible to express in figures the value of these pieces. The "Court of the Grand Mogul" alone once cost more than the construction of the palatial Baroque residence of Schloss Moritzburg. In 2006, the historic Green Vault was opened anew - reborn as a masterpiece of architects, artists, restorers, crafsmen and crafswomen from all over Saxony. Who were these people? What was their motivation? What nuts did they have to crack? Experience it all through moving moments and personal accounts - from the initial research in the 1990s to the collection´s ultimate return.
